Lanvin ♥ H&M

I love affordable fashion. Especially when it comes to fun, trendy pieces that only last a season or two. So this preview from Style.com of the new Lanvin ♥ H&M looks really promising.

The collection debuts November 20th, until then you can have a look at the H&M website. I’m loving all the poofs and frills I’m seeing… and just look at the shoes!

Online Shopping at The Bay

Just noticed that at The Bay’s website, you can now view the entire Home and Beauty collections and do online shopping! The little shopping icons in the navigation indicate that online shopping is available.

According to the site, the Women’s and Men’s sections will follow suit in Spring 2011. In the meantime, it’s great being able to browse the home and beauty sections. Great for christmas wishlists!

The *Real* Biggest Loser

If you spend any time on twitter or reading fashion news, you’ve probably heard the uproar about Maura Kelly’s “Should Fatties Get a Room?” article. If you haven’t you can see it here.

What a load of crap. If you “find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room” god help you if you ever become injured or ill in a way that keeps you off the treadmill. Or if, god forbid, you end up with chubby kids. This type of writing reeks of insecurity and reminds me of a grade-5 schoolyard taunt.

She also offers some flippant get-slim advice: “eat more fresh and unprocessed foods, read labels and avoid foods with any kind of processed sweetener …. and walk more” as if this is news to anyone.

Can you imagine if this same article was aimed at any other target: for example a racial group, sexual orientation, or a disability? It would be illegal. Yet somehow targeting “fatties” and advising them to stay off the streets is okay.

I hope this is the end of Maura Kelly’s career. It’s too bad that this garbage is associated with Marie Claire, the same magazine that features plus-sized columnist Ashley Falcon who gives great fashion tips.

Fashionwest Looking for a Plus-Size Fashion Writer

At Fashionwest, we want to cover every inch of Western Canada’s fashion scene. One thing we’ve noticed lacking in the world of fashion mags and blogs is coverage of plus-size fashion. There are plenty of us who don’t fit in the standard 0-12 dress size, and we want to hear your voice!

We’re looking for someone who lives in AB, BC, or SK, and has a love of fashion, beauty, and shopping. We want to provide coverage of plus size shopping in Western Canada: the good, the bad, and the ugly. We also want to hear about plus size models in high fashion and on the runway.

If you or someone you know is a good fit, contact megan@fashionwest.ca

Eco-clueless. I need your help!

I posted last week about how I’m going to try to be more eco-conscious and socially responsible in my fashion choices.

Since then I’ve realized that I’m totally clueless. I’ve spent so long ignoring all green products (I’m so terrible, I know) that I’m at a loss for where to begin.

So I’m asking you, readers: what should I buy and where should I shop? What eco-friendly and socially responsible products do YOU use?

Let me know in the comments, by e-mail, or on twitter.

Trying Something New? Being Responsible
One of my big goals lately has been trying to go more “green”. I feel bad saying it, but I’ve always let myself exist in blissful ignorance of the eco-trends: they’re more expensive and usually not as good as the planet-killing stuff, so why waste MY time on it? I was once convinced to trade in my lysol and Mr. Clean for some non-chemical products. They didn’t work. Since then I’ve been biased against any sort of green, organic, socially responsible product. Plus, the type of people who talk about it seem to be in the same group of people who wear dreadlocks and replace bathing with patchouli baths.
I’ve recently smartened up (maybe it’s the yoga classes my sister signed me up for for my birthday) and I’m realizing that I really need to get on the “responsible” bandwagon. I’ve been researching some socially responsible eco-friendly products, shops, and brands, and I’m going to try them and share my findings with you.
A friend directed me to Alternative Apparel, which has the same sort of basics as American Apparel, but with social responsibility and without the sleazy ads. I think I’m going to try ordering a few of my usual basics from there, and reporting to you if it’s worth it.
Are there any other great clothing lines or beauty products that are socially and environmentally friendly? Let me know if you have any suggestions, and I’ll be a guinea pig.
Hilfiger wants to Rock’n'Roll

Tommy Hilfiger celebrated his 25th at New York Fashion Week anniversary on Sunday night, with guest musicians The Strokes. He described his style as “preppy with a surprise”. The biggest surprise to me is that The Strokes were the band of choice for this event. I’m not sure I see the rock n’roll in the collection, which is dominated by solid colours and pastel tones. While All-American Tommy may not be the new face of rock, this bold collection is worth having a look at.

Erdem Fall/Winter 2010

Canadian-gone-global designer Erdem has some beautiful patterned designs for Fall/Winter 2010. Unfortunately his collection isn’t available in Western Canada (The Room in Toronto’s Bay is the closest we have. When are they opening The Room out West?) but you can still get your fill of eye candy on the website.

Online Shopping at Zara: Coming Soon

I am *very* excited that starting Sept. 2nd, you’ll be able to shop online at Zara. I don’t know if they’ll ship to Canada, or if they’ll have the crazy inflated shipping costs that so many other online retailers do, but my fingers are crossed that they’ll be catering to us up North.

I adore the Zara.com website. This fall they’re featuring a “behind the scenes” video and their fall lookbook.

Anna Sui Flight of Fancy

If there’s one thing I’m obsessing over lately, it’s the Anna Sui “Flight of Fancy” perfume. It has a young, fresh fragrance, and one of the cutest bottles I’ve seen in a while. Not to mention, the website makes me feel like a 13-year old princess again! It’s available at Urban Outfitters online and in-store. Get it just to have the bottle on display!
