Sustainable Fashion: The Designers – part 2

This is the second installment in Part 2 of my featurette on Eco Fashion and designer that incorporate some form of sustainability in their work . Click here for the first installment.

Dahlia Drive

Dahlia Drive gathers discarded women’s slips, dresses and men’s shirts and reworks them with colour, images and textures to create one of a kind fashion for the unique individual.

Each found piece is considered on its own merit: type of fabric, pre-existing stains or tears, how it responds to dye. Depending on these qualities, the piece may be buried in the garden with rusty things to over-stain previous stains or patched with pieces of fabric to strengthen a tear. Then each piece is dyed and screen printed with an image of bones, plants, animals, grid textures and/or lace patterns to produce another layer of history to the garment.

Ultimately, Dahlia Drive creates a sculptural piece which is only fully realized on the body of its new owner.

Lilikoi

The word “lilikoi” means passion fruit in Hawaii. To designer Barbara Boswell “lilikoi” means just that : the fruit of her passion. Barbara learned to sew and embroider as a child, and has carried the love of these traditions with her all her life. She studied design at KSA in Nelson , BC graduating in 2003. She also studied at the university of Hawaii at Manoa, a place whose beauty still seems to seep into her work. It was there that she began to conceive of Lilikoi, a clothing line that would bring the abundant beauty of the world around us into the world of fashion.

The Lilikoi line has a strong emphasis on hand printed cloth. Each print is an original drawing transferred to a silk screen for the purpose of production. The individual prints are used for a limited production run thus ensuring the beauty and uniqueness of each piece. Each Lilikoi garment design has been hand drafted and hand graded in the Lilikoi studio by actual human hands!

Lilikoi believes strongly in a hand-made revolution and in the pleasure of creating and owning well made, beautiful, Canadian fashion.

Lilikoi is striving for a sustainable future and we have brought this commitment to the environment into our design work. All Lilikoi clothing and accessories are made from sustainable fabrics such as bamboo, soy and organic cotton.

Sustainable Fashion: The Designers

This is the first installment in Part 2 of my featurette on Canadian designers that incorporate some form of sustainability in their work .

Kdon by Kim Cathers

Kdon is made with 100% recycled and upcycled fabrics.

Kim Cathers has been involved in the fashion industry for over 15 years. She has worn many hats, including, model, designer, retail store owner, environmentalist, Project Runway finalist, and most recently textile recycling activist.

Kim has always been a creative change-maker in her environments. She began remaking her own clothes over 15 years ago; she always understood the intricacies and necessity of living a life close to the earth. At the age of 20, she started a business called “ReStyle” where she would take old clothing and make fresh new items out of them. Kim travelled around to music festivals and farmers markets selling her wears with great success. She then moved to Vancouver five years later to get an education in technical sewing and pattern making. After graduating with the “Innovative Design” award from Blanche Macdonald Centre of Design in 2005, Kim opened and operated a successful vintage shoppe in downtown Vancouver which carried her own unique items as well as other local designers’. Two years ago Cathers was a finalist on Project Runway Canada, which helped to promote awareness and popularity of her fashion line.

kdon by Kim Cathers is a fresh line of clothing that is inspired by the earth created with the joy of imagination and finished with precise hand detailing. Kim designs with an innovative style, and is giving Eco fashion a new, strong voice.

SPATS!

I have loved spats for eons, and I’ll think we will start to see a lot of them.  Be one of the first to be spotted in them!

What are Spats, you say?  Spats originated in the seventeenth century and were linen or canvas shoe coverings that fasten under the bottom of the shoe and button up the side. They were first designed to protect shoes and ankles from mud and water while walking. Spats were worn by men in militaries around the world, from France to Japan, but between 1910 and the mid-1930s, spats eventually became an elegant men’s fashion accessory, often associated with gangsters and dandies.
SPAT TRIVIA  ↓

  • DC Comic villain The Joker has been seen sporting them in earlier interpretations
  • Michael Jackson wore them for Smooth Criminal
  • “Spats” Colombo (played by George Raft), the villain in Some Like It Hot, wore white spats.
  • In the film Benny and Joon, Johnny Depp wears spats as his character Sam.
  • In the classic Honeymooners Christmas episode, Ed Norton gives Ralph Kramden a pair of spats for Christmas.
  • Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s right-hand-man Riff Raff (hunchback) is known for his snazzy white spats.
  • Hillel Slovak wore them regularly while performing with his band The Red Hot Chili Peppers.  The RHCP album cover for the Abbey Road EP depicts this as well.

Wool Spats by Fait Avec, available in Vancouver at Planet Claire and online. These spats come in blue, black, ivory, grey lace, and plaid. They are a wool blend, so they keep your legs warm !

The spats are all lined for quality and cuteness, and come in a long and short version.

Add Colour to your Eyewear

This is probably one of the coolest pair of sunglasses I have ever seen. Fendi gave birth to this bad boy (and many other similar styles) for the SS 2011 collection. These sunglasses will definitely be a blessing to my own personal collection of glasses but it will also be a tragedy for my bank account! Ah, the financial struggles of a young student.  I know that we’re close to winter and Vancouver doesn’t get much sun during these drably months but if you’re looking for some cheap glasses check out Bang On! or Aldo. Those stores are usually my go-to spot when I’m thirsty for a new pair of hot shades. Anyways ladies & gents, the simple black ray bans just aren’t going to cut it anymore! Don’t be afraid to add colour to your eye wear accessories and just have fun with the art that big fashion labels are creating!

Canadian Baby Fashion

Recently I was faced with the near impossible task of finding an exclusively Canadian baby shower gift for relatives living abroad. This proved to be no easy feat as many of the toys and clothes in retail stores are made in China, India, or Pakistan.

I was saved upon arriving at Bo Bébé where I found Canadian designers showcased at the front of the store! Beba Bean Clothing, based out of Port Coquitlam B.C. not only sells kaftans and kimonos made of sustainable bamboo, they also have incredibly cute knitwear (yes…I’m a bit of  knitwear-phile, but don’t judge me before you check out that knit poncho!). Parade Organics from Vancouver B.C. is another favorite, you can’t help but smile at those adorable signature prints like ‘bean’ and ‘peanut’ on 100% organic cotton lounge sets, hats, and kimono style onesies.

Although both brands are designed in Canada, manufacturing (although fair trade) is outsourced to China and India respectively. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for fair trade and environmentally responsible fashion,  it just really gets me thinking about the size of our carbon footprints. Sweet Kyla is the only company I have found so far that designs and manufactures baby bedding, receiving blankets, and nursery decor in Canada.

Now I’m going to need your help as more baby showers come up in the next few months, where can I find exclusively Canadian baby fashion?

Autumn Air

Autumn may be in fact my favorite season, and not only because of the fabulous fall trends. From crunching ruby red and golden leaves underneath my flats, to the sweet fall air beckoning the last lazy days of summer, who can deny such beauty? I tend not to take the more macabre approach to the season, where Jack Frost has nipped each branch bare and the thought of winter chills me to the bone. I like to think of autumn as a transition from the the sizzling summer solstice  into a well deserved winter’s sleep.

Now, what are these fabulous fall trends you may ask? Layers, layers, layers! From delicate, ostentatiously colored tights and leggings layered beneath denim skirts and shorts, to rich plum sweaters and over-sized mustard cardigans. Fall style is haven’t-done-laundry-in-awhile-effortless mixed with ready-to-strip-these-layers-off-sexy! A definite autumn staple has to be KNIT.

Whether it be a knit scarf or a crochet beret, knitwear evokes comfort, familiarity, and love. These trends are embodied on the catwalk in LINE Knitwear by Toronto-based designers John Muscat and Jennifer Wells. Their Fall 2010 line admits very organic elements, with pieces such as  chunky knit dresses, heavy pullovers, and robe-like cardigans all in a variety of mixed yarn blends.

Calgarians can enjoy knitwear on a even more local level thanks to Sikknits. I recently found their table at Park Sale 2010, where a cream colored knit shawl, speckled like a robin’s egg, caught my eye. After returning to the table three times trying to rationalize the fact that I could knit this myself (but really who has the time? let alone the patience), I dug into my pockets and went for it! Sikknits boasts custom winter accessories like colorful toques(new design for breast cancer month!), scarves, and hikkie hiders….I mean, so what if it was a slow day at the slopes, who doesn’t need a hikkie hider?

Well, after a long day of frolicking in the fallen leaves and stocking up on my Sikk apparel, it’s time to put my feet up. The only thing left to do is to curl up in my cozy shawl with Paul Verlaine’s Chanson d’Automne in hand, and wait for winter’s welcome.

Calgary Fashion Round-up: Fall

Last night was the grand opening for the expansion of Chinook Centre shopping mall. A list of the new stores is here. I’m personally excited for Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters (which aren’t open yet), I’m surprised it’s taken so long for them to arrive in Calgary.

It’s also Alberta Fashion Week. I can’t cover Alberta Fashion Week, because it’s overlapping with the Calgary International Film Festival (I have a film festival pass, but not a Fashion Week pass. Two awesome festivals happening at once. This is an example of why when people complain about the lack of culture and things to do in Calgary, I want to smack them in the face). I was there last year, though, as a model for Daleio, and the shows were really well done. (My experience, personally, was about 2 hours of hair, makeup, and runway practice, and then being scared stiff walking down the runway trying not to fall off my high heels.)

We’ve had some huge gains for Calgary in the last year or so. From the newly-renovated Holt Renfrew, to Fashion Central (what girl doesn’t lose their mind over Betsey Johnson?) and the recent fashion events, I think we’ve come a long way. If only we can convince some of our fellow Calgarians to drop the lululemon-pant-with-cowboy-hat trend, we could be on our way to a seriously fashionable city.
