The *Real* Biggest Loser

If you spend any time on twitter or reading fashion news, you’ve probably heard the uproar about Maura Kelly’s “Should Fatties Get a Room?” article. If you haven’t you can see it here.

What a load of crap. If you “find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room” god help you if you ever become injured or ill in a way that keeps you off the treadmill. Or if, god forbid, you end up with chubby kids. This type of writing reeks of insecurity and reminds me of a grade-5 schoolyard taunt.

She also offers some flippant get-slim advice: “eat more fresh and unprocessed foods, read labels and avoid foods with any kind of processed sweetener …. and walk more” as if this is news to anyone.

Can you imagine if this same article was aimed at any other target: for example a racial group, sexual orientation, or a disability? It would be illegal. Yet somehow targeting “fatties” and advising them to stay off the streets is okay.

I hope this is the end of Maura Kelly’s career. It’s too bad that this garbage is associated with Marie Claire, the same magazine that features plus-sized columnist Ashley Falcon who gives great fashion tips.
